Tips to Remove Stains from Auto Upholstery

Keeping the interior of your car in good shape is not just an investment in case you wish to sell it off in future, but it is always nice to cruise around in a clean ride. After all, who would want to drive a dirty and stained car?

Tips for stain removal

Stubborn stains

Fabric or carpet stains that remain even after initial cleaning can be broken up with glass cleaner. Don’t forget to test an inconspicuous area to be sure it won’t cause damage. For instance, coffee spillage happens often in cars. Dilute the stain with cold water then blot with a paper towel, followed by spraying with glass cleaner. Let it sit for five minutes, and then blot to clean.

Carpet or fabric indentation

Cover the mark with a damp towel and gently iron it by setting it on low. To avoid melting fibers, don’t use a hot iron and don’t leave in one spot for too long.

Ink stains are common and they look awful! After testing a hidden area for possible damage, coat the stain with hair spray. Allow it to absorb for a few minutes and wipe off. Repeat accordingly.

Food and makeup

Makeup and food can lead to greasy or oily upholstery stains that can spoil the overall appearance of the interior. However, they can be tackled using watered-down paint thinner and a cotton ball. Just mix equal parts of these substances in a cup, rub into the stain with the cotton ball, sprinkle the stain with salt or cornmeal and let it sit overnight. The stain will disappear when vacuumed the following day.

Basic care pointers

·Don’t allow smoking in the car as it leaves a nasty residue and odor.

·Clean spills immediately by diluting them with cool cold water. Blot excess with a clean rag or paper towel.

· Clean leather with a cloth soaked in water and a low-pH soap. Allow to thoroughly dry and condition to prevent drying and cracking.

·Clean vinyl upholstery with a damp rag and baking soda. Rinse using water and dish soap. Don’t use oil- or mineral-based cleaners, which can make vinyl stiff.

· Vacuum dirt and debris on a regular basis.
